What is a Contract Research Organization?
One of the things that makes Charles River unique is that we’re a Contract Research Organization (CRO). CROs provide critical support to pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and medical device companies in the form of leading-edge research. We work with universities, support foundations, research institutions, and government organizations across the globe to develop life-saving medicines and therapies. Our work is incredibly diverse and provides an unequaled variety of options and opportunities for you to pursue.
Our business areas
The use of in vivo models is fundamental to basic research and discovery. As the world’s leader in the production and distribution of the highest-quality research animals, we bring seven decades of experience and unmatched expertise to this critical field. We’re able to provide the perfect model, including disease-specific and preconditioned options, for basic research and beyond.
We have proven success in helping develop novel therapies, with over 320 patents and 74 preclinical drug candidates delivered to our sponsors in the past 17 years. Backed by more than 650 scientists, our comprehensive, integrated portfolio employs the latest technology and platforms to provide chemistry, biology, and pharmacology services that support clients from the earliest stages of hit identification all the way through to investigational new drugs (IND).
We’re committed to helping our partners expedite their preclinical drug development with exceptional, comprehensive safety assessment services, state-of-the-art facilities, and expert regulatory guidance. Each year, approximately 120 investigational new drug (IND) programs are conducted in our Safety Assessment facilities.
We provide a comprehensive portfolio of endotoxin testing, microbial detection, and microbial identification products and services that have been specifically designed to meet the complex and ever-changing needs of the industry. We help clients ensure product safety and quality with easy-to-use, yet robust testing solutions that satisfy regulatory requirements, support critical decision making, and improve operational efficiencies.
With more than 50 years of experience and proven regulatory expertise, our Biologics group provides a breadth of services that can address challenging projects for biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies worldwide. Whether clients need stand-alone services, a unique testing package, or insourced support, we can create a custom solution to fit their needs. Each year, we support more than 20,000 biologic testing reports and over 200 licensed products.
Our Insourcing SolutionsSM can streamline research by delivering operational and cost efficiencies through the strategic insourcing of GMP, GLP, and non-GLP research services – from discovery through safety assessment. Insourcing SolutionsSM enables our partners to maintain control of their facilities and expertise while leveraging available space.
